چکیده

Combinatorial worlds can be used to give an account of necessity and possibility. Both accessibility and similarity between worlds can be deened. In this paper, we claim that combinatorial worlds can form a knowledge representation framework, and provide an interesting approach to nonmonotonic reasoning and belief revision. We investigate such aspects of the combinatorial worlds framework as computing concept lattices of worlds, entailment relation between concepts, accessibility between worlds and concept lattice inclusion, models of concepts and a corresponding notion of logical implication, and model-based belief revisions. Finally, we consider an example of nonmonotonic reasoning involving the notions of accessibility and similarity between worlds and systems of similarity spheres.

Issues in the Eecient Use of a Relation Ontology for Conceptual Reasoning Issues in the Eecient Use of a Relation Ontology for Conceptual Reasoning

In this paper we extend the framework of combinatorial and conceptual worlds to allow arbitrary relations. Conceptual worlds of properties provide a framework for knowledge representation, reasoning, and in particular for conceptual belief revision. However, it is desirable to consider such worlds where relations are not restricted to properties. Firstly, we discuss foundations of the conceptua...

What in the world are the ways things might have been ?

Robert Stalnaker is an actualist who holds that merely possible worlds are uninstantiated properties that might have been instantiated. Stalnaker also holds that there are no metaphysically impossible worlds: uninstantiated properties that couldn’t have been instantiated. These views motivate Stalnaker’s ‘‘two dimensional’’ account of the necessary a posteriori on which there is no single propo...

Speculative Nondeterminism

We propose a new programmable concurrency control framework called speculative nondeterminism for real time, “open” and distributed agents. In this framework, dynamic and concurrent agent programs affect each other through a centralized store which represents shared resources. Our framework has novel programming constructs which allows an agent to speculate against the future by multiple exclus...

Possible Worlds I: Modal Realism

It is difficult to wander far in contemporary metaphysics without bumping into talk of possible worlds. And reference to possible worlds is not confined to metaphysics. It can be found in contemporary epistemology and ethics, and has even found its way into linguistics and decision theory. But what are those possible worlds, the entities to which theorists in these disciplines all appeal? Call ...

Exploring "Multiple Worlds" in Parallel

We examine computing alternative solutions to a problem in parallel to improve response time. Problems with exploring multiple alternatives in parallel include (1) side-effects and (2) combinatorial explosion in the amount of state which must be preserved. These are solved by process management and an application of ‘‘copy-on-write’’ virtual memory management. The side effects resulting from in...
